As I sat in bed last night I began to wonder, how many people actually understand what Jesus meant when he said “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” in Matthew 16:24. So first I looked for the definition of self- denial. Self- denial is defined by the Merriam- Webster dictionary as “a restraint or limitation of one’s own desires or interests.” in essence self-sacrifice. But what does Jesus want us to sacrifice? Jesus wants us to sacrifice all things that will separate us from him and that will prevent us from doing his ministry. Too many times we find ourselves engrossed in the technology of the day. We become so fascinated and distracted by what what is happening around us that we forget the true purpose of life; to serve God and to do his work. Vanity and hedonism is our master. We allow pride to take precedence over God’s work. Now is the time that we give up our own selfish ways and start denying ourselves. Let us recognize that we don’t live for ourselves but we live for God. We live to serve Him and to glorify Him. Let us be living sacrifices in an effort to bring more people to Jesus Christ. Let our lives through self-denial be a living testimony as to what the transforming power of Jesus Christ can do.
